Arduino Uno Rev 3

The new Arduino Uno Rev 3 has arrived. In addition to all the features of the previous board, the new Arduino Uno Rev 3 now uses the ATmega16U2 instead of the 8U2 used in the older version (or FTDI found in previous generations). This enables faster transfer rates and provides more memory. Drivers are not needed for Linux or Mac (for Windows, an INF file is included in the Arduino IDE), and it can be controlled using a keyboard, mouse, joystick, etc.

The Arduino Uno R3 also features additional SDA and SCL buttons along with AREF. Moreover, it has two new buttons located near the RESET button. One of these is IOREF, which allows shields to adapt to the voltage provided by the board. The second is not connected and serves as a backup for future needs. The Arduino Uno R3 works with all existing shields but can also accommodate new shields that utilize these newly added buttons.

Arduino is an open-source physical computing platform based on a simple I/O board and a development environment that implements a processing/connection language. Arduino can be used to develop standalone interactive objects or can be connected to software on your computer (e.g., Flash, Processing, MaxMSP). The open-source IDE can be downloaded for free (currently available for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux).

Note: The Arduino Uno R3 requires the Arduino 1.0 driver folder for proper installation on some computers. We have tested it and confirmed that the R3 can be programmed with older versions of the IDE. However, when using the R3 for the first time on a new machine, the Arduino 1.0 must be installed on that machine.
