The non-refillable pH composite electrode has the characteristics of simple maintenance and convenient use, so it has been widely applied. However, when used as a laboratory pH electrode under long-term and continuous conditions, the KCl concentration at the liquid junction decreases, affecting testing accuracy. Therefore, when not in use, the non-refillable pH composite electrode should be soaked in electrode storage solution; this way, the electrode performance will be very good for the next test. Most laboratory pH electrodes are not for long-term and continuous testing, so the impact of this structure on accuracy is relatively small.

The refillable pH composite electrode has the characteristics of higher permeation rate of the reference solution, stable and reproducible liquid junction potential, and higher measurement accuracy. Moreover, when the reference electrode is reduced or contaminated, KCl solution can be replenished or replaced, but the disadvantage is that it is more troublesome to use. When using a refillable pH composite electrode, the filling hole should be opened to increase liquid pressure and accelerate electrode response. When the electrode liquid level is below the filling hole by 2 cm, new electrolyte should be replenished promptly.
